On Friday we take off on another road trip to Austria. The Bavaria ski club only had 12 people sign up for the last ski trip of the season, so we could not afford to take a bus down and instead changed it to a U-drive. Jeremy drove our car down with Shawn and Eric. We had a fun group and made the drive go by fast. We arrived in the small town of Kaprun just before dinner, settled into the hotel, grabbed a drink while we looked into dinner options. We walked to the center of town and ate at Tafern, excellent food and wine. The best dish was the one that Shawn ordered, the Bockbierschnitzel, we all highly recommend it and regret not ordering it for ourselves! After our delicious meal the rest of the group arrived in Kaprun, so we met them at the Baumbar. Live music that night and good pizza for all those that just arrived in town. We walked back to the hotel after a few drinks and rested up for the next day skiing!
Saturday morning started with a breakfast buffet at 0730 and hopped on the convenient bus that picked us up right in front of our hotel to the mountain! We were all ready to go and despite the lack of snow and fog at the base of the mountain, once we arrived at the top of the glacier there was plenty of snow and sunshine. We had a wonderful day skiing, it was a nice resort small but plenty of runs. We met for lunch at 1300 and enjoyed everyone's company and stories of the morning adventures. We skied until the last run down at 1545 and hopped on the bus back to the hotel at 1600. Dinner was not scheduled with the group until 1930, so we enjoyed the amenities of the hotel. Relaxing in the Jacuzzi and the sauna, which instantly smelled of eucalyptus the minute we walked in the spa. It was very relaxing and helped my muscles feel fresh and not sore for the next day of skiing.
After our relaxing spa time, we still had some time before dinner. Jeremy and I walked around the small, cute town of Kaprun. We went to the Kaprun Castle, although it was closed we could still walk across the bridge to the castle grounds and walk around the structure. It was medieval and well maintained with a gorgeous backdrop of the mountains surrounding it.
Sunday morning, same schedule breakfast and then skiing, although this time we packed up the cars and left after skiing for the day. The visibility and fog was worse than yesterday and the sunshine kept trying to come out but it was still a good day of skiing. We met for lunch at the very top, with panoramic views of the glacier. Above the restaurant, there was a platform that we could walk out on and take excellent pictures of the glacier below us. We stood at 3029 meters, the highest point on Kitzsteinhorn Glacier. Great weekend spring skiing, last ski trip of the season.. Ready for spring and flowers and fest time in Germany. Until next winter, Good bye snow!
